FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Paint manufacturers use two broad categories of pigments: inorganic pigments (such as titanium dioxide for white, iron oxides for yellows, reds, and browns, and chrome pigments for yellows and greens) known for their opacity and durability; and organic pigments (such as Azo pigments for yellows, oranges, and reds, and Phthalocyanine pigments for blues and greens) known for their brightness, high tinting strength, and clean hues. The choice depends on the type of paint (decorative, industrial, or automotive) and the required performance.
For exterior paints, the most critical pigment properties are weatherfastness (resistance to rain, humidity, and temperature fluctuations), lightfastness (resistance to UV-induced fading over years of sun exposure), heat stability, chemical resistance (to alkalis in cement-based substrates and to pollutants), and good hiding power. Phthalocyanine pigments (Blue 15.3, 15.4, Green 7) and High Performance Azo pigments are typically preferred for exterior applications due to their superior durability.
Pigments used in water-based (waterborne) paints must be hydrophilic, easily dispersible in water, stable across pH ranges, and compatible with water-based binder systems. Solvent-based paint pigments need to be compatible with organic solvent systems and resin binders, with low moisture absorption. Modern high-quality organic pigments — particularly Phthalocyanine and certain Azo grades — are engineered to perform well in both systems, making them versatile for paint formulators.
A pigment dispersion is a pre-ground, ready-to-use liquid form of pigment particles suspended in a medium. Paint manufacturers use dispersions because they reduce the need for on-site grinding equipment, ensure consistent particle size for better colour development and gloss, save time in the manufacturing process, reduce waste, and allow easier handling and dosing — especially in tinting systems where precise, repeatable shades need to be achieved quickly at the point of sale or in the factory.
